I would like to work with Ben K on this project because of his musical expertise and similar interests on this subject.

I wanna be a keytar hero!

This is a concept I have for either the next project or the one after. The phenomenon of Guitar Hero has piqued my interest, and I wish to create a kind of music synthesis device. The basic idea is to have a sliding cluster of buttons attached to a light sensor that would change pitch/octave depending on the tonal value of the fretboard. To play a note I was also considering the idea of installing a range sensor that would alter the sound depending on how far your hand was from it, although I might also just make that a push button as well. Combined with some sort of visual representation of the musical notes, this instrument would be a visual and aural device that could compose compositions both on the screen and through the speakers.

project 1

After much meddling with MAX, I have figured out something interesing for the first project. I was interested in how I could juxtapose the part where the video zooms in with the part where the video zooms out. I accomplished this by using the scissors/glue objects to split the video into a 3 x 3 form that combines the zooming our on the whole universe and the zooming in to the atomic level simultaneously. Combined with that is a drunk object changing the playabck rate of the video every 1.5 seconds, creating a disorienting and uneven direction of video which seemed to change the nature of the video. I especially like the difference in audio playback, with the calm narrators voice switching intermittently to that of a frantic chipmunk.

This video will be projected onto an opaque plastic form which puts the two sections of video on different planes which both isolate and unify the changes in playback rate and video motion.

blog it to the limit

I am stil formulating an idea for the first assingment. One idea I had was to make it so that the distance of ones hand from the sensor on the Telio would control the direction of the video. The form to be made out of plastic has yet to be decided upon, but will most likely include an opaque plastic form on which the video will be projected.

One intesting link I found on the internet was the use of the Guitar Hero controller in a MAX patcher program. The game Guitar Hero for the Playstation 2 allows the user to play along to a rock song with a plastic guitar controller with buttons and even a simulated whammy bar, much in the same vein as Dance Dance Revolution. This guy has written software that allows the user to both play .wav samples through the computer and also record sequences that can be replayed back and looped over.
